The community developed in the shadow of the Basic Magnesium Plant, which supplied the nation with raw materials for munitions and airplane parts during World War II. After the war, the plant closed and Henderson's growth slowed for several years.
In the late 1970s, the master-planned community of Green Valley was established in Henderson and southeast Las Vegas. Green Valley is known for its high-quality, family-oriented lifestyle.
Henderson is now home to nearly 25 master-planned communities. Some of the most popular include Anthem, Seven Hills, Green Valley Ranch, MacDonald Ranch and Lake Las Vegas.
Education
Schools in the area are among the best in the Clark County School District, and Green Valley High School was named one of the top 10 U.S. high schools in 1997.

Recreation
Henderson has over 40 parks and provides more recreational facilities per capita than any other community in southern Nevada. Henderson's parks and recreations department also won the gold medal for excellence in Parks and Recreation administration in 1999 and is accredited by the National Park and Recreation Association in 2001. With over 11 miles of walking trails, 7 outdoor swimming pools, 50 tennis courts, 42 baseball fields and 3 indoor swimming pools, there is always something to do in Henderson.
Henderson also boasts several public and semi-private golf courses. Water skiing, fishing, camping, jet-skiing, hiking, sailing and scuba diving are also available at Lake Mead, located just a mile away. Henderson also has a bird viewing preserve, which is home to over 200 species of birds. Cultural events throughout the year include the annual Shakespeare in the Park, Made in Nevada Art Fair and Art festival to name a few. There are also concerts at the Henderson Pavilion at Liberty Point, the largest outdoor amphitheater in Nevada.
